Martijn Heijboer was born and raised in Tholen, the Netherlands, in a Christian family within a conservative Reformed community. Despite growing up in these circles, Martijn remained a nominal Christian. Traveling and international business intrigued him, so he pursued a degree in International Business Management and eventually studied and interned in the United States in his early twenties. During this time, Martijn fell in love with the country and began pursuing immigration.
While continuing to attend church on Sundays, Martijn’s life during these years was largely divided: outwardly connected to his Reformed upbringing, yet spending much of the rest of the week living in ways that did not reflect those convictions. During the final stage of his studies, when Martijn moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, the Lord began drawing him to Himself, as Martijn became convicted of his need to be saved from sin and to be brought into a right relationship with God. In the years that followed, there were many spiritual struggles, due to misunderstandings about what true saving faith entails, but as the simplicity and clarity of the gospel began to shine through, Christ became increasingly precious to him.
After completing his studies in 2012, Martijn worked in international business for a company located in Columbus, Ohio. During this time he met Abigail, and the two married in 2015. After four years of working in Columbus and commuting to Grand Rapids on weekends, Martijn left his job and moved permanently to Grand Rapids. While he initially struggled to find suitable work, the Lord began to direct him toward ministry, particularly with an interest in missionary theological education.
In 2018 Martijn began studying theology at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary (PRTS) under the care of the Heritage Reformed Congregations (HRC). In 2023, he completed his MDiv and continued with a ThM degree while being sent to the mission field with his family to serve as a lecturer at Mukhanyo Theological College in Rustenburg, South Africa. At the conclusion of this period of service, providence directed the Heijboer family back to Grand Rapids, where Martijn completed his ThM and was examined and declared a candidate by the HRC.
In early 2026, after a period of interviewing and building relationships, Martijn joined Seventh Reformed Church in Grand Rapids to serve in pastoral care and outreach.
Martijn and Abigail currently live in the Eastown area of Grand Rapids with their children Mae, Jamie, and August.
