Morning Worship

The Fiery Furnace of Unholiness
Pastor Paul van Engelenhoven

  • Sermon Theme: In this third week through the book of Daniel, we meet the friends of Daniel who refuse to worship Nebuchadnezzar’s statue and are thrown into the fiery furnace. This historic event is filled with important lessons for us today about the refusal to worship idols, the willingness to suffer, the reward of those who are faithful to God, and the nearness of God to those who trust in Him!
  • Sermon Text: Daniel 3:1–30
  • Sermon Notes:
    • Introduction: Nebuchadnezzar’s Golden Image
      1. The Refusal to Worship the World’s Images (Daniel 3:8–12)
      2. The Willingness to Suffer for Holiness (Daniel 3:16–23)
      3. The Nearness of Christ to Those Who Walk in Holiness (Daniel 3:24–30)
    • Application: The Constant Need for Radical Devotion to God

Afternoon Worship

Faith and Favoritism
Mr. Matthew Reyes

  • Sermon Theme:  As we continue in the book of James, James navigates a very concerning issue in the church: the sin of partiality and favoritism. James seeks to address this issue and exposes the heart of favoritism as stemming from a prideful, self-centered heart. James exhorts and calls us to examine our hearts and to put away any desire for partiality, and instead encourages us to imitate Christ the Righteous Judge. Partiality and favoritism makes wicked judgments and focuses on false worldly distinctions, while Christ judges righteously from the Law of God and not from Man’s prideful standards. In our last study, James emphasized the importance of living the Word through our speech and conduct; now James calls us to live in such a way that sets aside partiality and cultivates unity from a heart of humility.
  • Sermon Text: James 2:1–7
  • Sermon Notes:
      1. The Sin of Partiality (James 2: 1)
        • Partiality is self-centered pridefulness and is contrary to humble faith in Christ.
      2. Partiality in the Church (James 2:2–4)
        • Partiality causes strife and division, but humility cultivates unity.
      3. Evil Judges vs. The Righteous Judge (James 2:5–7)
        • Evil judges focus on outward appearance, but Christ the Righteous Judge looks at the heart
      • Application: Favoritism views the world through the lens of pride and vain glory, but righteous faith in Christ views the world through faith, humility, and love, seeking to honor Christ over man and desires to live justly, not with partiality.
